If you live in Christchurch, and want some fun, local ideas for dates, then this is the blog post for you. I have been on many dates in my time, and I have learned where the interesting, fun places are that are easy to miss. Some of these places are well-known and popular. Some of these places are secrets that even local residents miss.
Date Idea 1: A Trip to the Fudge Factory
Christchurch used to have a Fudge Factory, attached to the old cinema in the city center. It used to be a wonderful little spot – until it got destroyed in the February 11 earthquake. Most people assumed that it closed forever. But that is not the case. It has reopened in Bishopdale’s shopping center. Best of all, it looks very similar to how it did before, as though you were stepping into a fudge shop from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.
As well as buying an assortment of delicious fudge, you can go on the tour of their factory. Here, you will see first hand how they make it, and help make some yourself, too. You will be given a goodie bag at the end to take home. The whole tour takes about an hour, so combining this with a trip to a coffee shop is a great idea.
Date Idea 2: The Port Hills
Christchurch is very lucky to be surrounded by hills that have been looked after very well by the Department of Conservation. There are plenty of beautiful walks to go on. During the winter, it can be cold and drizzly, and during the summer it can be scorching hot. I recommend doing these walks in the Autumn or Spring then so that you don’t get too hot or cold, and can take in the amazing scenery, at times equal to some of the best in New Zealand.
Date Idea 3: Adrenaline Forest Course
The Adrenaline Forest Course is just 45 minutes out of the city, and a nice easy drive. If you want a date idea that is has plenty of adventure and is active, then this is the one for you! You will be swinging and climbing through an obstacle course. You will be zip lining through the trees, so if your date has a fear of heights, this is not the activity for them! It is very safe, and you will always be clipped to a safety harness. It can be a bit pricey, so you can save this activity for something special, such as a 6 month of 1 year anniversary trip.
